Two concurrent social issues are food insecurity and food waste. The practice of gleaning (collecting unharvested crops left in the field) offers a mechanism for combining these problems to create a synergistic solution. Food Banks can make substantial contributions to reduce food waste and alleviate food insecurity by establishing effective gleaning programs, under the appropriate policy framework.
