Steve Wicker, Professor of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, talks about the impact of the
5G mobile network. Steve observes that the private sector has
traditionally done well in developing multiple generations of cellular
technology. However, the U.S. has lagged in rolling out new technology,
due to lack of government involvement. This has led to underserved areas
where profitability can be more challenging.
With 5G, the U.S. will play a bigger role in providing
services as opposed to developing technologies. We will see significant
changes in the marketplace in the next 5 years, as 5G will be revolutionary,
not evolutionary. One example will be the delivery of all internet
connectivity for the home through a single platform, facilitated by cellular
convergence.
