This lecture introduces the problem of Type 1 Diabetes, the challenges
faced by patients, caregivers, and clinicians when trying to manage this
complex condition. As an alternative to finding the elusive cure for T1D,
researchers around the world are pursuing the concept of an Artificial
Pancreas. We discuss the impact of Systems Thinking on revealing the
Big Picture, finding the right problem to solve for an effective disease
management system, and to enable new opportunities that will improve
the quality of life for millions of patients around the world. The discussion
concentrates on the analysis of stakeholders in the Operation phase of the
product development life cycle as an illustration of the power of Systems
Thinking to devise a system architecture that satisfies the needs of a greater
group of stakeholders, and that displays high-value emergent properties as
a result of the functional interactions of its components.
