Abstract:
As an “Academic Capitalist”, I will discuss four startups that use Operations Management (OM)
and Operations Research (OR).
1. Enterprise Supply-chain Software: SmartOps Corporation (acquired by SAP AG)
I was the founder and CEO. I will discuss how I built the company and monetized my OR/
OM research in stochastic multi-stage inventory models. There is a Darden case on this.
2. Private Equity and Lean Manufacturing: CCG Inc.
Founded by my MBA students, I was a Board member and a limited partner. I will discuss
how small U.S. manufacturers can compete against (mainly Chinese) imports in a globally
competitive marketplace.
3. Dynamic Ads in Video Games: Massive Incorporated (acquired by Microsoft)
Co-founded by the wife of a friend of mine, my Ph.D. student John Turner and I provided
the OR algorithms.
4. Reimagining Social Entrepreneurship: OrganJet + GuardianWings
I am the founder and CEO. I will discuss how I am building this (partnering with insurance
company Highmark). There is a HBS case on this “contract hybrid”, a new form of legal
entity in the U.S., the first of its kind approved by the IRS.
