Rhodes Hall, 253 ORIE Colloquium: Eugene Feinberg (Stony Brook) - Long Island Smart Energy Corridor Project and Other Industrial Applications of Operations Research Long Island Smart Energy Corridor is a five-year Smart Grid demonstration project funded by the Department of Energy in 2010 to implement some of Smart Grid technologies for an electric power distribution network and demonstrate their advantages. One of the main directions of this project is to install additional measurement and control equipment on a part of the electric power distribution network and to use operations research methods to improve network’s efficiency. The Stony Brook University team conducts the research part of this project. The talk describes the project and focuses on the voltage control problem. The talk also provides an overview of other industrial projects on energy, healthcare, and defense. Bio: Eugene Feinberg works in stochastic methods of operations research and their industrial applications. He is one of the world leaders in Markov decision processes and its application to telecommunication, manufacturing, transportation, service and to other man-made systems. He is one of the country’s experts on optimizing electric energy transmission and forecasting energy demand. Dr. Feinberg previously held appointments at Moscow Institute of Transport Engineering (Russia ), Yale University, and MIT.
