Professor Dockery has studied the health effects of air pollution exposures in populations for over 35 years. Long-term follow-up studies have shown particulate air pollution is associated with shortened life expectancy in adults and increased risk of cardiac events. In addition, his work has shown that episodes of particulate air pollution are consistently associated with increased daily mortality, increased hospital admissions and emergency room visits for respiratory and cardiovascular diagnoses, cardiac events, and cardiac arrhythmias. This research has led to the current debate on the role of particulate air pollution in producing adverse effects and to the re-evaluation of air quality standards both nationally and internationally. His current research is attempting to document the health benefits of the improvements in air pollution controls; he will speak on the exposures and health effects of fine particulate air pollution and specifically how to measure the health benefit of air pollution controls.
