Challenges and Opportunities for Digital Horticulture: Sensing, Automation, and Analytics

Abstract:

Agriculture is facing tremendous challenges in its productivity, sustainability, and quality from the rapidly growing population, changing climate, and severe shortfall of arable land and water resources. Although significant investment and research advances haven been made for field crops, horticultural crops (e.g., fruits and vegetables) receive much less attentions, leading to potential risks of nutrition security, a critical issue in addition to food security for human beings. It is imperative to develop sensing, automation, and analytical tools for horticultural crops. In this talk, I will describe past and ongoing projects on the integration of imaging and computing technologies to extract key features for improving the yield, quality, sustainability, and adaptability for major horticultural crops through a systematic approach.

Bio:

Yu Jiang joined Cornell AgriTech as an Assistant Research Professor of Systems Engineering and Data Analytics for Specialty Crops in 2019 right after the completion of his Ph.D. degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science from China. He leads the Cyber-Agricultural Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) lab dedicated to the development of advanced engineering solutions to critical challenges in modern agricultural research and production by combining sensing, robotics, and data analytics.
