For the last several years, Argentine lawyer and political
scientist Aldana Romano has been collaborating with Cornell Law professor
Valerie Hans and others to study the remarkable expansion of trial by jury in
criminal cases in Argentina. Romano will describe the political context of the
introduction of trial by jury, and discuss findings from the empirical research
surveying and interviewing judges, lawyers, and jurors who have participated in
the new Argentine juries. She will reflect on the implications of these
findings for democracy in Argentina.
