Yuan Shi studies new products and novel technologies in a wide range of sectors, including entertainment, tech, and venture capital. Examining potential pressures causing rising short-term-ism in investor firm valuations and in markets, he and his collaborators look at strategic implications for firms. Another paper empirically establishes a relationship between short-term-ism and the quality of firms’ increasing R&D spending, which does not seem to be improving in quality. Some industries, including those in the hospitality sector, are more long-term-driven and patient, meriting study. Shi and his collaborators also examine the shifting of power from traditional gatekeepers to general consumers.
